Park Introduction

Tainan Shan-Shang Garden and Old Waterworks Museum

In order to provide clean domestic water and improve environmental hygiene, W. K. Burton, the sanitation engineering consultant of the Governor-General of Taiwan at the time, and Hamano Yashiro, his student and assistant, started the Tainan waterworks construction project in 1912, which supplied clean water throughout Tainan via a gravity water system. Years later, with the establishment of Wusanto Reservoir, Tsengwen Reservoir, and Tanding Water Purification Plant, this old watercourse was decommissioned in 1982, after the modernization of sanitary engineering in Taiwan during the Japanese era.

In 2011, Tainan City Government started a restoration project. On October 10th, 2019, Tainan Shan-Shang Garden and Old Waterworks Museum officially opened. The extensive complex and hundred-year-old waterworks buildings have attracted a large number of visitors, becoming a new cultural feature of the city.

The site includes the forest section, the garden section, and the museum section. The forest section and the garden section preserve rich natural ecology and plants. The collocation of trees, plants, and historic sites form a relaxing atmosphere for visitors to wander in this culture heritage complex. Additionally, the museum section is divided into several exhibition areas, such as the quick filter pond room, the filter room, and the pump exhaust room. All these historic buildings are well-preserved. With the revitalization of these buildings and a well-organized guide system, visitors can easily understand the development of tap water in Taiwan, as well as the great contributions of W. K. Burton, Hamano Yashiro, and Yoichi Hatta.
