Rev. Thomas Barclay’s dedication, an 1878 Sunday worship bulletin, and Taiwan Church News signage listed in the Memory of the World - National Registers of Taiwan
Update:2019-07-22
Tainan Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage and Tainan Theological College and Seminary jointly applied for the first Memory of the World - National Registers of Taiwan selection in 2017 with historic artifacts relating to Southern Taiwan Presbyterian Church’s mission work. The items the two organizations submitted competed against 28 other historic artifacts from around the nation. Three of their submitted items were selected and listed along with eight other pieces in the 2018 Memory of the World - National Registers of Taiwan. The first listed item relating to Southern Taiwan Presbyterian Church’s mission work is Rev. Barclay’s handwritten dedication, which shows how he lived his life for mission work. The second document listed is Rev. Barclay’s 1878 Sunday worship bulletin. Sunday service dates on the bulletin are shown in Gregorian and lunar calendar dates. The last artifact is the Taiwan Church News signage, which were instrumental in the founding and promotion of the Peh-oe-ji romanization system by Rev. Barclay.

This year Tainan Theological College and Seminary, Taiwan Church News, and the Museum of Church History jointly entered precious historic church items in their collection to participate in the 2019 Memory of the World - National Registers of Taiwan selection process. Artifacts including the moveable type printing press used to print the 1885 Taiwan Prefectural City Church News, the Taiwan Church News published by Rev. Barclay, the New Testament written by Rev. Barclay in Romanized Taiwanese, a photo album with pictures of Rev. Barclay and Tainan Theological College and Seminary, and Rev. Barclay’s robe.
