■ Secretary of Farmer’s Corporative, Tainan County/ Lin Qui-xung

In recent years, the beauty of Tainan’s industry not only has been reflected in the abundance and exquisite level of the agricultural and fishing industries, but also on other promoted value-added business: the second level processing industry, the third level leisure activities and tourism, the fourth level of learning and healing experiences, the fi fth level of creative culture and the sixth level of integrated operations. Therefore this southern city with a unique industrial development style obtains not only the differentiation, but also shows its soft power in promoting and developing festivals.

For the past 15 years, there were more than a hundred activities with forty to fi fty variations staged. They took place in different seasons or months, sometimes the time gap was as short as one day, but it could be as long as several months. In terms of space, they were in every corner of every area. The small scale shows were organized by the community and the large-scale projects would be held by the whole area or in collaboration whith different districts. In the10 years that passed, we can now divide them into certain representative categories according to economic and cultural aspects:

From an economic aspect, fi rst rate products include orchid, mango and Taiwanese porgy. Those listed champion products according to offi cial statistics include: pomelo, white pomelo, longan, mango, star fruit, tomato, muskmelon, milk and honey; runner-ups are pineapple, orange and custard apple (Annona).
In addition, coffee is the emerging product.

From a cultural aspect, pomelo grabs the spotlight for its status in the history. Mango has its origin here in Tainan. As for milkfi sh and sweet potato, they have a long history connected to Zheng Cheng-gong and are the most accessible food to people. In addition, two aquatic plants, lotus and water chestnut have always been synonyms of poetry and their productions have always been on the top of the list. I listed eight categories of local specialties according to the seasons:

Sweet and Sour Perfume Fills Guangmiao in May ─ Pineapple, Bamboo Shoot and Guangmiao Noodles
There are 16 pineapple production areas in Tainan and they yield annually 90,000 tons of fruits. If you want to draw a pineapple route, you can take the second southern highway, the axis of which on both sides are densely covered by pineapple plants. Along the 38 K to the 50K sections are plenty of pineapple fields, especially at the 40K where the Pizaitou is.

Lotus Blossoms in June and Lotus Root Grows in December─ Beihe is Full of Lotus
There are two major groups of lotus in Tainan, one is lotus and another one is water lily. The lotus village Beihe is famous for its summer lotus blossom scenery. In addition, lotus leaves, fl owers, seeds and roots have become important Taiwanese products.

New Summer Rice Encounters Wumile ─ Hobi Rice Granary with Organic Rice
There are endless plains in the Hobi area, and here has been the biggest rice granary of Tainan since early times. In recent years, people even began to sing “Wumile”(Let It Be) which shows on the one hand farmer’s optimistism and helplessness and on the other hand, their devotion to turn those limited rice paddies into fi elds for better quality rice and some organic rice. In the meantime, they created brands for rice, including Dreaming Beauty, Shangshui rice, Lanli rice and Wumile.

Summer, Red Ripe Mango Appears in July ─Yujing Mango has Many Varieties
Yujing became “Mango land” for having great success in promoting Aiwen mango. In May 1990, the local people organized a Mango Festival and petitioned to keep mango trees as shade trees on the provincial way 20. This was the fi rst fruit festival. In 1999, people from this area even organized an arts and culture festival “Yujing Mango Festival” allowing the South Pacifi c species, the Indian species, and western species and improved breeding species to be presented togheter. This Festival now has becomed an important annual event.

In Summer, Silver Glows Shine on Xibin ─ Beimen Milkfi sh Ecotourism
Xibin is famous for its diversity of industries and cultural activities: fi shery, salt, fruits, Wangye faith, lagoon estuary, horbor marketplace, as well as periodic waterfowl arriving in the intertidal area and forming a coastal style painting. Celebrations with fruits, salt and fi sh as the main items, constitute the Beimen Milkfish Festival, Jianjun Carrots festival, Banzhi Flower Festival, Quilt festival, Mullet Rice Festival, Qigu Muskmelon Festival, Yanshang Music Festival, Clams Festival, and these can be extented to include the Xigang Black Sesame Festival, Jiali Lappa Festival, Xuejia Sunfl ower Festival and Watermelon Festival. All these
events constitute an array of colorful industrial activities.

Osmanthus Blossoms and Longan are Ripe in August─Dongshan Wood
Kilns Longan is Better than Ginseng The main longan production areas are Dongshan, Nangxi, Nanhua and Liujia. And 30 percent of the production comes from Dongshan. In terms of quantity produced, longan is he number three fruit after mango and pineapple in the city. Moreover, this fruit remains the number one in the fruit processing industry. Longans are mainly baked in the traditional clay iln with burned longan leaves which give them a unique fl avor and make them high-quality dried fruits. People can fi nd the most famous clay kiln around Dongshan Erchungsi.

Seasonal Product for the Mid-Autumn Festival ─ The Famous Madou Pomelo
Madou pomelo was originally just an ordinary pomelo, but when the fruit was attached to the city’s name “Madou” in 1935, ‘Madou pomelo” became a proper name. The main value f this fruit is its gift image for the Mid-Autumn Festival. In addition, there is also avocado before the Festival and red pomelo and large white pomelo after he Festival, they are all high-end Madou products.

Fresh and Red Water Chestnut Arrives in October─Guantian is Full of Autumn Fragrant of Water Chestnut
Guantian is located at the west side of the Wushantou reservoir. This plain where many ponds gathered was called the water land. Since ancient times, water chestnuts bred in the ponds, which were
the deep-water water chestnut’s original production area. In 1980, the government converted rice fi elds into other products plantations, so water chestnut culture was done on a large number of rice paddy
fields after rice harvest. The farmers plant the sprouts in May and June and the new water chestnut appear in September, the peak production season is October. During the harvest season, we can see
a great amount of rafts drifting on the water.
The main feature of industrial festivals is that they take nature as their stage and the main characters appear regularly each year. However, if people do not pay enough attention and control the
production, they may miss their opportunities or profi ts.
