本屆總爺國際木質創作展邀集了擅長以木材創作的藝術工作者,分別以駐村創作、邀請創作和作品參展的方式,將人文環境的客觀條件與主觀想像融合在木質創作的對話與激盪之中。紅樓、紅磚工藝館和廠長宿舍等三個展館,分別以身體的構成、文化的共鳴、生命的視野與物質的寬容等理念來彰顯本展主題「甜蜜時刻」的旨趣。

打開麻豆的地方開拓史與製糖產業的過往,這些源自地方糖業歷史的存有與記憶,讓來自國內外的當代藝術工作者,以其關於生活經驗的自我觀想而逐漸開啟了關於木質的獨特想像與實踐。張子隆致力於充滿生命能量的造形風格;謝茵認為「自力更生」是一個人要達到甜蜜時刻的必要條件;張家駒闡明時間會沉澱出真相並顯露出真正的原型;林煌迪主張「寫生」是讓過去、現在與未來的擬想,同時並陳於作品與歷史建物共同的時空中;Viktor Lois關於美與醜的思考以及局部與整體意象之創造;ZsoltNyári著手表現甘蔗的抽象與自然;林建志提出良木與廢材的思辯;王瑞亨挖掘木頭在個人認知中的某一種想像;王耀俊強調當下的形質察覺與美感體驗。

時序進入2017年的總爺時光,本展勾勒出受到地方、糖業、房舍和樹木等所啟發的藝術思維與行動,透過創作者的構思、勞動、展現以及觀眾的參與,我們期待空氣中彷彿還飄盪著的蔗汁氣味與糖品甜蜜,可以依然伴隨著我們的出生、成長與老去。

This year’s Tsung-Yeh International Wood Art Exhibition gathers woodwork artists through creation and exhibition to initiate dialogues and brainstorming sessions, by combining objective conditions and subjective conceptualization. The exhibitions will be held in three exhibition halls this year: the Red Brick Office, the Red-brick Craft Hall, and the Wooden Official Residence. The artwork will explore the concepts such as the composition of the body, cultural resonance, the vision of life and the tolerance of materials to shed light on this year’s theme: “Sweet Always.”

If we look at the local exploration and industrial development of the sugar industry in Madou, we discover a history that has enabled domestic and international contemporary artists to express their own perspectives towards the realization of wood art through life experiences. Chang Tzu-lung has been devoted to a sculpture style full of energy; Yin Peet believes that “Self-Sustaining” is essential for being “Sweet Always”; Chang Chia-chu illustrates the power of time that uncovers the truth and shows real prototypes; Lin Huang-ti proposes his piece “Life Drawing” by conceiving the past, the present, and the future, whilst simultaneously arranging his works with historical buildings in the same time and space; Viktor Lois presents the arrangement between ideas of ugliness and prettiness, and partial and a whole image of creation; Zsolt Nyári shows abstract and natural characteristics of sugarcanes; Lin Chien-chih proposes a discussion on the difference between ‘useful’ and ‘waste’ materials; Wang Rui-heng rediscovers the way in which is perceived in one’s consciousness; and Wang Yaw-jun emphasizes the existing perception s of materials and aesthetics experiences.

At this year’s 2017 Tsung-Yeh International Wood Art Exhibition, we initiate artistic thinking and action by examining local themes, the sugar making industry, historical buildings, and natural sceneries. Through conceptualization, labor, artistic expression and public participation, we expect each of you to feel the sweet taste and flavor in the air that accompanies us from the cradle to the grave.
